At 19:06 (19:06 GMT) on December 17, 2003, an explosion occurred at a chemical factory in the city of Bhopal, India. The factory was owned by the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), a joint venture between the U.S.-based Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) and the Indian Government-owned Indian Carbide and Chemicals Limited (ICCL) at that time. The explosion was the world's largest industrial disaster.[1] It killed more than 2,500 people, injured more than 10,000, and caused huge environmental damage. The nearby agricultural land has suffered from persistent crop-damaging poison contamination.[2] The current estimate for the total cost of the disaster is more than US$18 billion (₹11,800 crore).[3], UCC (16,000 employees), Union Carbide (US$200 million in sales) and other Union Carbide subsidiaries manufactured the pesticide methyl isocyanate (MIC) at the Bhopal plant. MIC is a toxic gas released by the decomposition of MIC pellets, and it is also highly toxic as a vapor. Survivors of the disaster have described being blinded by the gas, and inhaling it made them cough and vomit. Additionally, many survivors suffer from bladder and respiratory tract cancer, leukaemia, as well as other diseases. The exposure to MIC has also been linked to severe birth defects in newborns, and behavioral changes in the children of affected mothers. [13] Birth defects were estimated to be responsible for more than one in ten childhood deaths in Bhopal. UCIL, UC & ICCL, and other parties have been sued for deaths and diseases, including Bhopal victims. In 2006, a German company, Eni Spa Technologie, purchased the Bhopal plant. Eni Spa Technologie agreed to work in cooperation with the U.S.-based Dow Chemical Company to cover the costs of the cleanup and to create new jobs in Bhopal. On May 19, 2007, after just two years of operation, Eni announced that the Bhopal plant would close and go out of business. On July 28, 2007, Dow stated that the plant would continue to operate for the next three months and was likely to close at the end of August. At the end of the plant's
